INTRODUCTION

The department of oral pathology and microbiology encompasses two basic foundation subjects of dentistry, namely Dental anatomy & Oral histology and Oral Pathology. The subject of Dental Anatomy and Oral histology acts as a launch pad for freshly joined dental graduates to understand the nuances of dentistry whereas the subject of Oral Pathology opens the door to a wide spectrum of oral diseases and acts as a gateway for better understanding of the various dental specialties dealt with in later years.

FACILITIES

  • Fully equipped Dental anatomy and Oral histology lab with 40 Self-illuminated monocular microscopes for undergraduates and a self-illuminated Binocular microscope for demonstration of special cases to students.
  • Fully functioning and well equipped Histopathology cum Haematology laboratory
  • Extensive archives of study models, tooth specimens and audio-visual materials comprising of animated educational videos and student projects which create a conducive learning ambience.

The discipline of Oral Pathology covers a broad area and includes

  • Dental Anatomy: Very important subject in 1st year of dentistry as it is concerned with detailed study of tooth morphology includes the shape, size, number, function of each tooth and various surrounding structures which help in smooth functioning of mastication and swallowing.
  • Oral Histology: Students also learn to see the slides under a microscope wherein they deal with microscopic details of parts of tooth and different layers of tooth which prepares a concrete foundation for understanding the clinical subjects of
  • Oral Pathology : It deals with the study of different oral diseases effecting the oral cavity such as diseases of gums , tongue , salivary glands and maxillary sinus
  • Forensic odontology: It deals with identification of individuals after mass disasters which further helps in settlement of property and insurance.

ACTIVITIES

  1. Learning tooth morphology through wax carving of teeth.
  2. Assessment of patient casts to improve and practice the knowledge of tooth notation and age estimation.
  3. Projection of Slides pertaining to Oral histology as well as Oral pathology for learning microscopic architecture of healthy as well as pathologic conditions affecting the oral tissues.
  4. Analysis of original Tooth specimens and patient casts depicting various dental anomalies
  5. Computerized histopathology and haematology reports are provided to patients undergoing necessary investigations for the same
