INTRODUCTION

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a recognized  specialty amongst the medical & dental professions, this field addresses wide range of problems involving the Head and Neck region, which have an impact on the overall health and well-being of an individual. The scope of this specialty is very extensive ranging from simple extraction of teeth to surgical removal of impacted teeth, pre-prosthetic surgery, dental implants, management of orofacial pain, maxillofacial space infections, pathologies &trauma, oral cancer, facial aesthetic problems like cleft lip and palate& temporomandibular joint disorders.

Specialized intensive clinical and surgical training in this field is mandatory to treat these complex maxillofacial problems and also effectively interact with other allied disciplines (general surgery ,ENT, plastic surgery &anesthesia) to provide total care. Considering the complexity and multidisciplinary nature of the problems involved, continuous lifelong learning through scientific interactions and both basic and clinical research is required for better and more effective treatment solutions.

We train our undergraduate pupils to perform basic skills of clinical diagnosis and minor surgical procedures and to recognize & manage complications.

Through continued learning and excellence, the department in particular, and the college in general, strive at collaborating with centers of quality research, education and service, to provide sustainable levels of education, growth and development of our students and staff, this intern helps us in serving our patients with the best of our abilities.

OBJECTIVES

The training program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is structured to achieve the following five objectives-  

  • Knowledge: To have acquired adequate knowledge and understanding of the etiology, pathophysiology and diagnosis, treatment planning of various common oral and Maxillofacial surgical problems both minor and major in nature
  • Skills: To perform with competence minor oral surgical procedures and common maxillofacial surgery. To treat both surgically and medically the problems of the oral and Maxillofacial and the related area based on scientific research which are in the best interest of the patient
  • Attitude: Develop attitude to adopt ethical principles in all aspect of surgical practice, professional honesty and integrity
  • Communicative Skills and Ability: Develop adequate communication skills particularly with the patients giving them the various options available
  • Research: Willing to adopt new techniques of surgical management developed from time to time based on scientific research which are in the best interest of the patient.
